IEC 62680 is the unified international standard for USB Type-C interfaces and PD fast charging (mandatory for EU CE market access). It mainly consists of two parts:
IEC 62680-1-3:2024 (Physical layer: connectors & cables)
IEC 62680-1-2:2023 (Protocol & power delivery layer)
1. IEC 62680-1-3:2024 – Mechanical & Electrical Specifications
Applicable to: receptacles, plugs, connectors, cables
1.1 Structure and Pin Definition
Must comply with standard 24-pin or 16-pin definitions; non-standard simplified 6/8/12-pin designs are prohibited.
Strict dimensional tolerances to ensure cross-brand mating compatibility.
Housing: conductive or non-conductive with continuous shielding.
1.2 Mechanical Performance (Mandatory)
Durability: ≥ 10,000 mating cycles
Insertion force: 5–35 N; withdrawal force: 8–20 N (≥ 6 N after 10,000 cycles)
Cable flexing, tensile strength, 4-axis shock, and vibration tests
Temperature & humidity cycling, salt spray, and mixed gas corrosion tests
1.3 Electrical Performance
Contact resistance: ≤ 30 mΩ (initial); ≤ 50 mΩ (after aging)
Insulation resistance: ≥ 100 MΩ @ 500 V DC
Withstand voltage: 250 V AC for 1 min (VBUS to GND), no breakdown or flashover
Differential impedance: 85 Ω ±9 Ω (high-speed cables)
Temperature rise: ≤ 30 K at 5 A continuous current
1.4 Cables and E-Marker
E-Marker chip is mandatory for cables supporting ≥ 3A or USB PD
Must be marked with: 60W / 240W power rating and 20/40/80Gbps speed logo
240W cables: ≥ 18 AWG, 48 V voltage rating
2. IEC 62680-1-2:2023 – USB PD Protocol & Power Specifications
Applicable to: chargers, hosts, peripherals, PD-enabled devices
2.1 Power Ranges
Default: 5V/1.5A (7.5W)
SPR: 20V/3A (60W)
EPR: 20V/5A (100W), 48V/5A (240W)
USB PD support is mandatory for devices with power >15W
2.2 Protocol Requirements
PD 3.0+ & PPS mandatory for devices >27W
PPS: 3.3–21V, 20 mV voltage step
CC pin: automatic DFP/UFP/DRP role detection, FRS (Fast Role Swap)
Multi-port power sharing, current limiting, and thermal management
2.3 Safety & Compatibility
Over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, and reverse-connection protection required
Must be compatible with third-party PD chargers; proprietary protocol locking is prohibited
240W products must comply with IEC 62368-1 / IEC 63315 safety standards
3. EU Mandatory Effective Dates
From 28 December 2024: mobile phones, tablets, cameras, earphones, speakers, etc.
From 28 April 2026: laptops and selected peripherals
Products without IEC 62680 test reports will be detained at EU customs and banned from sale.
4. Certification Process Essentials
Qualifications
USB-IF VID (Vendor ID)
Samples: connectors / cables / end products + matching PD chargers
Testing Laboratory
Must be ISO 17025 & ILAC-MRA accredited
Combined testing with USB-IF certification is supported (one test for dual reports)
Reports & Marking
Test reports must reference: IEC 62680-1-2:2023, IEC 62680-1-3:2024
Product & packaging: clearly marked power range and USB PD logo
5. Key Compliance Checkpoints (2026)
Interface: 24/16-pin design, 10k mating cycles, contact resistance ≤30 mΩ
Cable: E-Marker for ≥3A, clear power & speed marking
PD protocol: mandatory PD support above 15W, mandatory PPS above 27W
Safety: OVP, OCP, OTP, short-circuit protection
Documentation: IEC 62680 test reports + CE-RED certification
